The Windows team at CERN who also look after the
browsers, are concerned about the state, and especially the future, of
Netscape on W2000. No decision has been taken as far as I know but this
meeting would be a perfect opportunity to see what other labs think and
are planning. |

NGOP
[

The increase in size and complexity of computer farms
continues at a rapid rate with no end in sight. Current management and
monitoring tools do not sufficiently scale to handle this strain. NGOP(Next
Generation Operations) is a distributed management system being devloped at
Fermilab to address these issues. This talk will give an overview of NGOP, as
well as report on the progress of this project. |

The exploding popularity of PC farming has lead to
farms of thousands of processors and promises for orders of magnitude more.
Such an unprecedented scale has put strain on current management tools and
techniques, necessitating a fresh start. This talk will review CERNs experience
in farming and set the context for the recent EU proposal for developing
integrated farm management tools |

SAN Investigations at FERMI
[

One major obstacle for an physics analysis cluster
concerns access to the large amount of online data needed by the various
physics analysis jobs. FERMI is investigating a SAN solution to this problem.
Tests are being conducted on various solutions (CXFS, SANergy) to see which
work well in a multi-os, many box scenario. This talk will report on the data
we have collected so far. |

The BQS batch scheduler
[
Powerpoint
][
Web
]
|
BQS is the batch scheduler in use since 91 at the
CCIN2P3 and a few more sites more recently. BQS is not a commercial product, it
was written at the CC because at that time no solution offering the level of
functionnalities we needed and to which we were used with SLAC's BMON on VM was
available. BQS is now a fairly stable product that suits well our needs. Given
the current interest for the question of batch scheduling, I am offering to
present BQS, its architecture and main features. |

Jbqs:A graphical interface for BQS
[
Powerpoint
][

]
|
Jbqs is a graphical interface designed to manage the
bqs software. Until now all the bqs orders were only available in a command
shell format, so we decided to write a graphical interface called: Jbqs. Jbqs
is a Java (Java 1.1) written application. It's not an applet. It is intended to
run on any Java platform (including PC or Mac). |

The Farms Batch System Next Generation(FBSNG) batch
system is a rewrite of the FBS system that has been in production since the
Summer of 1998. Unlike FBS, FBSNG is not a layered on top of LSF. This has made
administration of the system more straight forward, as well as allowing new
features to be implemented. This talk will give an overview of the FBSNG system
and the current status of the project. |

Plans for a mini-GRID for CDF-UK
[

|
The UK groups involved in CDF have recently been
awarded a grant for a large quantity of IT equipment to be distributed around
the UK Universities, RAL and FNAL. It is planned to use elements from the
GLOBUS toolkit to provide some simple yet effective mechanisms for controlling
distribution of data and jobs around these new systems. The strategy makes best
possible use of existing software and it is anticipated that the system will be
ready for the arrival of the hardware in May 2001. |
